Last week on Britt Hume, Charles Krauthammer glibly stated that the economic meltdown was due to charges that banks were racist and discriminating against African Americans and were forced to create risky subprime mortgages. (I believe this could be true, because one thing I know for sure is that CEOs of major banks hate it when someone lobs the "racism" bomb at them and will quickly change their business strategy based on these types of allegations. They respond more quickly to allegations of child abuse, but racism is their second most feared charge.) Anyway, later on some right-wing talk radio show, liberals were blamed for the economic meltdown and accused of forcing lenders to offer mortgages to poor people. (I doubt this is true because bankers only change their business practices when they are facing racism or child abuse rumors, but rumors about being plain old mean or unfair do not usually result in new internal banking policiies.)
I have scoured the Internets and used the googles to find recent laws forced through by the liberals that propelled lenders and Wall Street into the subprime mortgage realm. I cannot find new Fair Housing Laws that would have contributed to this crisis, while two laws sponsored by Phil Graham and passed through the Republican Senate under Clinton in 1999 and 2000, the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act and the Commodity Futures Modernization Act provided the loopholes that led directly to the economic meltdown.
Now, can someone explain this to me? How is that African Americans, poor people and liberals can bring down the US economy, force financial giants to collapse and force the government into unprecedented bailouts and not even be told when we succeed? Why was I never informed of the power and control we wield over Wall Street and the banks? Since African Americans, poor people and liberals are truly responsible for this mess, can we get those CEO's golden parachutes? I am tired of the rich people taking all the credit and getting all the good stuff. Where's our stuff? We broke it and we should get paid good money for that!
